Cuenca: The Best City in Ecuador.

This blog will be separated into three parts to define the city I am living in: Best things about Cuenca, Halloween in Cuenca, and Pictures of Cuenca.

Best things so far in Cuenca
I shall write this blog early rather than later, because six months from now, I may become too accustom to the great attributes of Cuenca. The city itself is very beautiful, as you will see in the scenery section below. Mountains surround the city, the streets are made of cobblestone, and the buildings make you think you are walking the streets in Europe. My favorite restaurant at the moment is called Molienda Café which serves great Columbian food. It is one of the few places mentioned in The Lonely Planet which I actually agree with (The Lonely Planet, by the way, is an atrocious source of information in which the authors opinions differ greatly than mine. That is another story, for another time though). The Lonely Planet also describes an amazing gelato place which is a terrible place to get ice cream. I prefer a little Italian restaurant called il Forninace which is literally a block from the Parque Calderon (the main square in town).
My walk to school is amazing. As you will see in a later video blog, I walk along the Rio Tomebamba. La Universidad de Cuenca (the school I work at) is a pretty awesome place to work. Besides the disorganization and lack of communication (another rant for another time) it’s a great place to be. The students are awesome and I get along with the marvelously. Although a short list, I will try and keep updating the cool things to see, eat, and do in Cuenca!

Halloween in Cuenca
Halloween recently tried to sneak by us last week as celebration of the commercialized holiday is not celebrated down here! Although a few little kids did dress up, no one over the age of four was wearing a costume; except for us crazy Americans. I had decided to go as a nerd/pedophile/typical American tourist and did not need much, as I closely resemble two of those (If you look to the side you will see a pole; go ahead and vote for what you think I most closely resemble, but be sure to look at the pictures and finish this part of the blog first). Not wanting to drop a great deal of money on my adventures in costume wearing. I perused the markets very carefully. What I found was a pair of sunglasses, and the greatest pair of suspenders you have ever laid your eyes on. If you cannot tell from the picture to the left, the suspenders are those meant for a young child, they recite the ABC’s and the connecting clamps are shaped like little kid hands (this is where you might think about changing your answer from nerd/tourist to pedophile). The kicker was when I shaved everything except for a glorious mustache that would make Tom Selleck jealous (this is where you definitely change your answer from nerd/tourist to pedophile.)

Since a big group of volunteers had come down to Cuenca for the extended weekend we all went out in our costumes in search of a good party. We ended up at some discotech that made me feel like I should be on ecstasy, flailing around glow sticks, or both. It was straight out of Miami. I didn’t mind much, got stupid drunk, and surprisingly enough did not lose my suspenders! They will be used for another night, that, I guarantee.

Cuenca Scenery
Obviously my camera doesn’t do justice to the beautifulness that is Cuenca, but try and make do.
